PAHIATUA, Jan. 23.
Mrs Hillas, of Pori, is visiting Palmerston North for a few days. Mr and Mrs Gamble and Miss Gamble, of Paeroa, ore staying at the Parsonage. Mr and Mrs H. A. Bick recently spent several days on a motor camping tour of the Wanganui and Main Trunk districts. A motor collision occurred on the Mangamairo Road, near tho Publio Works I Department’s electrical sub-station, about 9 j o’clock on Thursday night. In a two-seater Eroceeding to Mangamairo was Miss L. awaon and Mr P. Kondall. Tho other cor was occupied by Rev. W. B. Pickering (who had boon conducting a meeting at Mangamaire), and Messrs A. R. Pickering, G. Wingfield and J. B. Gamble (of Paeroa). Both oars were damaged, but tho occupants escaped injury. Carnival Park was yesterday the locale of the United Friendly Societies annual picnic, whioh was held under ideal conditions. The morning broke fine after Thursday’s rain and a gentle breozo | tempered the sunshine perfectly. Children lof all ages were as usual in the majority and amongst the many adults were yisitora from Eketahuna, Woodville and Palmerston i North district. The Municipal Band was in attendance and rendered some pleasing selecjtions between the programmo events. The following results of examinations in ! shorthand, typewriting and book-keeping have been reecived by Mrs Aston, Commercial instructor at the Pahiatua D.H. School. Shorthand, Jessie Milne, intermediate shorthand,7o4 per cent.; Lelia Griffiths, elementary shorthand 92 per cent.; Victor Cornwall, elementary . Shorthand 89 per cent. Typewriting: Jessie Milne, intermediate 87 per cent.; Victor Cornwall, 75 per cent. Intermediate book-koeping: Elsie Keast, 96 per cent.; Herbert Daldy, 84 per cent.; Victor Cornwall, 89 per cent.; Jessie Milne, 88 per cent.; Liela Griffiths, 92 per cent.; Joan Paget, 74' per cent.; Jack Hercock, 66 per cent. All the candidates passod. In (ho University entrance scholarship examinations, G. F. Paterson, second son of Dr and Mrs Paterson, of Pahiatua, had the notable distinction of heading the list of successful students for the Dominion with a total of 1998 marks. Ho is a student at Nelson College and an old boy of the Pahiatua District High School. His achievement is a very gratifying one. In the intermediate section in connection with. the recent. Otago University medical examinations, Irvine Paterson, eldest son of Dr and Mrs Patterson, was also successful iri passing the examination. He also is- an ox-pupil of the local high school. Jan. 25.
; Mr and Mrs J. L. Boagey, Te AroHa, | are tho guests of Mr and Mrs J. J. Boagey, Tyndall Streot. Mrs R. Lyons, Wellington, !is staying with her mothor, Mrs C. 11. Arrow, “Hillcrest.” Mrs J. P. Boyle has roturned from a holiday spent in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs A. E. Urwin, of Ractihi, aro tho guests of Mrs G. Turner, Sedcolo Street. Mrs C. Cook, of Kaikoura (Marlborough) and Mrs M. Clapperton, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs W*. Boyons, of Sedcolo Street, left on thoir return homo to-day. Sirs W. A. Wilson, Tyndall Street, has left to spend a month’s holiday at To Awamutu. Mr L. W. Kitchen, was called to Trontham on Saturday night owing to tho death of his father, who had. been ailing for somo time. »
