CORRESPONDENCE.

POPPY DAY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—For some years past we have been fortunate enough to be able through the sale of poppies to assist in obtaining employment and to provide means of relieving distress amongst focal ex-servicemen. Never during the history of our association has the need been greater than at present tor us to have something available for this, and I think I am justified in describing it as a most estimable purpose. On Saturday next we are undertaking the annual poppy day to provide the nucleus of our fund for the incoming year. In all my association distributed during the last year upwards of £650, which, with subsidies, provided wages to men otherwise unemployed of approximately £IB2O. The whole of the money distributed was not derived through the sale of poppies, but a considerable portion of it was. Of the money disbursed £345 was paid through the City Council, £lßo through local schools, £lO5 trirough outlying districts, and £22 in relief of distress.

May I be permitted to appeal through your columns for the continued support of our effort by our generous public. I admit that times are hard, but the contribution of one shilling is only a small one for an aggregate result that is correspondingly large in providing food and clothing and happiness to deserving families. — I am, etc.,

B. J. JACOBS, President R.S.A,
