WOODVILLE

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. WOODVILLE, April 10. The Woodville Borough Council met on Thursday evening, the Mayor (All- H. P. Horne) presiding. Also present were Crs. Harding, Bickering, Nicholas, Sutton, Johnston, Ainckie. Rose and McCormick. The secretary of the Woodv:llo Hockey Board wrote regarding the proposed exchange of property adjoining the Woodville hospital. The board's proposal was agreed to . The Inglewood Borough Council wrote asking for a donation to assist in its expenses in connection with charges in test case concerning rates on property .mortgaged to the Crown, it was decided to make a donation of one guinea. Te secretary of the Woodville Hockey Club applied for permission to use the Recreation Ground for matches, on the same terms as last year and forwarded £1 Ids rent for ground.—lt was decided to grant the clubs request. In accordance with his notice oi motion, Cr J. Harding moved that “The resolution passed at the last meeting, that the C| ucrstion of salary reductions be held oyer until the estimates for the new financial year are being considered,” be rescinded. This was seconded by the Alayor, and after a general discussion, tho motion was lost by 6 votes to 3. The town clerk reported that up to March 31, 90.8 per cent of the rates struck had been collected. The outstanding rates amounted to £l4l 13s Id. .During ti month the following licenses, etc., bad been granted: Heavy traffic 4, motor driver 1. public hall 1, dog tax _ receipts £5 ss. Tho credit balaneo on April 8 was £193 2s 4d. Tho annual report of the clerk read as; follows: The general account is in a healthy state, commencing the year with a debit balance of £3089 15s 8d and finishing with a debit balance of £2183 14s. This is very satisfactory. Tho main items are as follow: —Receipts from the general rate amount to over £I2OO. As against £BO9 for the previous year, there is an increase of licenses received of £l7. On the expenditure side there has been a reduction of over £2OO for labour for street maintenance and over the total expenditure for this item including highways maintenance a reduction of nearly £6OO. street drainago amounts to £63 17s Id, as against £l5O 16s 9d for the previous corresponding period. In the reservo account commenced with a credit balance of £2lO 16 6d and finished with a credit balance of £133 8s lOd. There was a reduction in the expenditure for maintenance of over £2O in this account.. The biggest item in the expenditure side was £SO for surveying for tilt exchange of land. The public library account commenced the year with a credit balance of £l2 5s 8d and concluded the vear with a credit balance of £4 10s 6d. The water supply account commenced the year with a credit balance of £386 10s and concluded with a baalnce of £223 4s Id, thore was a reduction in tho labour costs for the period of about £44, whilst repairs amounted to £54 6s. The gasworks account commenced with a balaneo of £1257 10s 8d and finished the year with a balance of £1235 18s, showing that, despite the tact that an amount o f£2o9 os 4d cash had to be paid over as depreciation fund, commission and other interest and sinking fund charges also paid, the undertaking has maintained its position. The street lighting account is the only other account showing a debit balance of £2 6s 6d. The sewerage and surface loan interest account shows a credit balance of £728 15s lid. The other interest accounts are on a level with other -years. The above accounts, disclose that the council has kept well within tho estimates for the year and in some cases, shown a considerable saving in expenses genernllv. As this is the last mooting of the council as now constituted, I wish to take the opportunity of expressing tho staff’s appreciation of courtesy and consideration shown by the council at all times. Tho Mayor congratulated the clerk on his good report and His promptness in presenting his statements to the council. As this was the last meeting of the present council, His Worship thanked the the councillors for their services during me past two years and hoped they would seek re-election at the next election. Ho, himself, had decided to seek re-election. Appreciation of the good work carried out by the Alayor and Mayoress was expressed by several councillors.
