FITZHERBERT WEST.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

FITZHERBERT WEST, Jan. 2.

A most successful concert was held on Boxing Night at the residence of Mr and Mrs T. Young, where both young and old had their fill of fun and pleasure. Coloured flowers and punga ferns decorated the walls and the stage. The concert items were as follow: —Hymn, “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful,” Bible Class Girls (Misses Erie Berkahn, Enid Greer, Freda Greatorex, Iris Lovelock and Irene Greatorex); recitations, Miss Iris Lovelock and Miss Irene Greatorex; musical items, Mr Stanley Greatorex and Mr Walter Greer, who also accompanied the following singers: Miss Freda Greatorex and Miss Erie Kerkahn. A “proposal” scene was most effectively carried out by Miss Freda Greatorex (as a Spanish senor) and Miss Erie Kerkahn (the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Spanish merchant). The Bible Class girls, who were daintily attired, entertained the audience with three action songs, “The Dutchies,” “Baggy Breeches,” and an encore “Tiptoe Thro’ the Tuiips.” The Bible class girls then performed an interesting playette, “All in Due Season.” Miss Erie Berkahn made a charming queen, being attired in a black satin gown and a long train. She was adorned with jewellery, her' coronet being also of jewels; “Spring” wore an emerald-green dress, and carried a basket of blossoms; “Summer” was attired in ivory white, and carried roses; “Autumn’Vore a lemon gown with red berries and autumn-tinted leaves; “Winter” wore a brown coat, trimmed with imitation frost and snow, with hat and knee boots to match, she carried a ball of snow. “The Imp” was arrayed in an orange and black coattee, with a beige georgette skirt, peaked hat and pointed shoes to match. This playette was produced by Mrs E. B. Watson, a talented lady of Palmerston North, who .also arranged “A Study from the Life of Queen Esther.” The Queen, whose part was taken by Miss Erie Berkahn, was attended by four hand-maidens, Misses Freda and Irene Greatorex, Iris Lovelock and Enid Greer. Miss Doreen Saunders delightfully entertained the audience by rendering several recitations, and a song, which was accompanied by Mr Stanley Greatorex. Her items were all greatly appreciated. Mrs Burrell presented Mrs Young, the hostess of the evening, with a beautiful bouquet, after which Mrs Young suitably replied. Mr L. Lovelock capably carried out the Julies of chairman. A dainty supper was served, after which the Bible class prizes were presented, Miss Erie Berkahn and Miss Iris Lovelock winning the attendance prizes. The evening was brought to a close after the singing of “F'or They are Jolly Good Fellows” and “Auld Lang Syne.” Many visitors were present from Palmerston North and the surrounding districts.
