OBITUARY.
MR H. E. BEST. After a painful illness, the death occurred at his residence, Kairanga, on Saturday, of Mr Harold Edward Best at the age of 42. The late Mr Best, who was born in Nelson in 1888, came to Palmerston North with his parents in 1899, and from that time has been a resident of Kairanga. Upon the death of his father in 1919 he took over the farm. Mr Best was a keen follower of spprt of all descriptions, being a member of the Palmerston North Gun Club and having won several championships. Hp was a member of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, Manawatu Racing Club and Manawatu Club. , Those left to mourn their loss are his wife and two children, William and Edna. There are also three sisters, Mesdames J. Egan, F. Hearsey and r . Stevens. During his many years residence at Kairanga the late Mr Best built up a large circle of friends and to his widow and young family much sympathy will be extended.. The funeral ieft the residence at Kairanga this afternoon for the Palmerston North cemetery.
HON. J. BARR. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 7. After several weeks’illness the death occurred to-day of Hon. J. Barr, member- of the Legislative Council. Born at Paisley, Scotland, in 1867, the late Mr' Barr was educated at the public school at Poilokshaws, near Glasgow. On leaving school he commenced work in a weaving factory, but afterwards took up masonry. After serving his apprenticeship, he crossed the Atlantic, and worked for some time in Victoria, British Columbia. He next visited Northern Alberta, anu worked at his trade along the Canadian Pacific railway. Mr Barr came to New Zealand in 1902, and at once associated himself with labour politics. He became president of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, ana took an active part in the work of unionism. He was well read on social and political subjects, and was an earnest, impressive speaker. Mr Barr was first called to the Legislative Council on January 22, 1907, and was reappointed in 1914, 1921, and 1928. He was appointed Chairman of Committees of the Legislative Council on July 8, 1925. The flags on the Government buildings in Palmerston North were flown at half-mast to-day out of respect to the deceased legislator.
