Dr. E. C. Barnett, of Palmerston North, recently attended the Rotary Club at Salsbury, Austria. At the meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board to-day a vote of sympathy with Mr W. Neil, of Newbury, in the death of his wife was passed. The friends of Mr J. W. Smith, of Knowles Street, Palmerston North, will regret to learn that he has been taken ill and is at present an inmate of the public hospital.

A London cable message reports the death of Sir Otto Beit, K.C.M.G., a trustee of the Rhodes Trust, aged 65. Sir Otto founded the Beit Memorial Fellowship for Medical Research. Mr Walter Gray, who was admitted to the Wellington Hospital last week, suffering from injuries received when he jumped from the bathroom window of a blazing house in Oriental Bay, died on Saturday. The late Mr Gray was an accountant, of Sydney, and was to have left New Zealand on Friday to rejoin his wife. Mr Oscar Garden, accompanied by Captain Haig, of Sydney, arrived at Timaru from Dunedin yesterday. Mr Garden was officially welcomed to the town where he resided for a number of years, by the Mayor, Mr W. Angland. Mr Garden later paid a flying visit to Temuka, and in the evening was the guest of the Aero Club and municipal authorities at a dinner.

Mr George Manly Yerex, whose death at the age of 74, occurred at Tahiti recently, was descended from a pioneer American family, his greatgrandfather being a German prince who settled in Georgia prior, to the War of Independence. His mother’s family were prominent Empire Loyalists, who migrated from the United States to Toronto, Canada, in order to remain under British rule. In 1885 Mr Yerex came to New Zealand, and for a number of years was prominent in business in Wellington.
