Art unions for two splendid dolls will be drawn at 9 p.m. There was keen interest in the domestic competitions, which attracted good entries. Mrs W. Taylor (chairman of the School Committee) extended a cordial welcome to all, expressing pleasure at the fine weather and conveying thanks to the ladies for their generous assistance. Referring to the presence of Mr Nash, the speaker stated that the member for Palmerston North had a warm-hearted interest in the school.
Mr Nash expressed his pleasure at being able to attend. He endorsed Mr Taylor’s tribute to the splendid work of the ladies. It was unfortunate that the Minister of Education had to leave earlier for AYellington, but he had asked the speaker to express his deep regret and convey his best wishes to all. Funds had to be raised to help to meet the maintenance requirements of the school, which was an old building, stated Mr Nash. He hoped _ that the time was not far distant when a similar function would be held adjacent to fine new buildings. 'Continued representations had been made, and as a result it was anticipated that College Street would receive a new school earlier than would otherwise have been the case. Children must be housed in good schools. It was interesting to note that the average attendance for children of schools in the AYanganui district during the past year had been 90.8 per cent. Mr Nash paid a tribute to the splendid work of the school committees in promoting the establishment of a central dental clinic. He predicted that a fullvequipped building would be available in Lombard Street by April next. In conclusion he congratulated all associated with the arrangements for the function and those who worked wholeheartedly in the interests and welfare of • the children. In declaring the fete open, Air Nash expressed the wish that it would meet with every success.
Subsequently the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Airs A. J. Graham) visited the function.
