MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 13. “Tlris is a pernicious system,” sai-l Chief-Detective Hampiond in the Police Court to-day in a” case where William Roberts, aged 22, a labourer, pleaded guilty to stealing a wristlet watch, valued at £-5 12s Gd, and a gramophone, valued at £ll, which he had obtained on time payment. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in admitting accused to probation, said that firms should give goods only to responsible persons who possessed homes. Mr Hamomnd said that the watch .and gramophone had both been bought on a small deposit, and subsequently accused had pledged the watch and sold tho gramophone. Mr Campbell, probation officer, referring to tho time-payment system and the way it could be abused, told of a case where a man had been admitted to probation in the Police Court at .10 a.m. and at 11 a.m. had bought a bicycle on a 2s deposit and afterwards sold it. Roberts was ordered to make restitution to the amount of £ls ss.
