WOMAN KILLED

LORRY DRIVER CHARGED. Per Press Association. NAPIER, May 10. Mrs Mary Kingsland, the wife of Mr James Kingsland, of 'le Awa, Napier, was this afternoon knocked down by a motor-lorry driven by Reginald Frank Hunt, of Hastings, and killed instantly. A charge of being drunk has been laid .against the driver. Deceased had just crossed the radwav line at Todd Street, Napier, on a bicycle, when the lorry, coming irom the opposite direction, knocked her off the machine. The front wheels of the lorry passed over her body. Tlte unfortunate woman was dragged some yards before the lorry stopped. A constable took charge of the lorry and drove Hunt to the police station, where he was detained on a charge of driving a motor vehicle while, it is alleged, being in a state of intoxication. . An inquest on Mrs Ivingsland was opened before the Coroner, Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M. James Kingsland stated in evidence that his wife was 62 years of age and her sight and hearing were good. Witness reached the scene of the accident soon after it occurred and recognised deceased as his wife. Someone pointed out Reginald Frank Hunt and told witness that Hunt was toe driver of the lorry. Witness told a constable there that Hunt was drunk, and witness noticed as Hunt went cli with the constable that he could not walk steadily. Witness had no doubt that Hunt was drunk. Tthe inquest was adjourned.
