SPIRITUALIST’S DEATH.
VERDICT OF SUICIDE. Received April 16, 11 a.m. LONDON, April 15. An inquest was held into tho death of W. Ml Atkinson, who was found jassed in his room at York Street, .Uarylebone. A verdict of suicide was returned. Tho Coroner said that it was clear Atkinson was not quite sane. An artist who had employed, Atkinon gave evidence that his drawing was automatic. When he tried to draw by jonscious effort he made a hopeless mess. Atkinson had lately been turning out weird landscapes suggesting prehistoric country. He was depressed jy his failure to sell the drawings.
When in New Zealand Atkinson refuted the idea that spiritualism was the cause of his drawings, and was inclined to be worried about it. According to a friend in Auckland, he met Sir Arthur Canon Doyle, who said that apparently he was under the spiritual influence of some artist, but Atkinson was inclined to sneer at this.
