COLLISION ON MT. STEWART.
MOTOR-CYCLIST AND CAR. SERIOUS INJURIES SUSTAINED. Five men were removed to the Palmerston North Hospital as a result of a collision between a motor-cycle, ridden by Me Alfred Hickey, and a car-load of footballers returning from Sandon on Saturday. Mr Hickey sustained a fracture of the right leg, a compound fracture of the jaw and extensive abrasions. His condition is serious. Tho driver of the car, Mr J. Evans, of Sandon, suffered a fracture of the right arm aiid abrasions, but his condition is not regarded as serious. One of the passengers, Mr Phillip Fitzgerald, was admitted suffering from abrasions and two others were discharged after being treated for minor cuts and abrasions. The accident took place on the bitumen road above Mt. Stewart. The car contained, in addition to the driver, four members bf the Hui Mai team who were returning to Rangiotu after a practice game against Sandon. Both the car and the cycle were badly damaged, the larger machine ha/ing to be moved off the road to clear the highway. Mr Hickey, whose parents reside at Ashhurst, is well known*in Feilding. Just over a month ago, he was transferred from the Sandon Post Office to the Feilding telephone exchange, and he was on his way to visit friends at Sandon when the accident occurred. On inquiry at the hospital this afternoon we were informed that the patients are progressing as well as can be expected . HUSBAND AND WIFE KILLED. NGAURANGA GORGE ROAD FATALITY. WELLINGTON, April 13. Mr Norman John Cook, a grocer of Johnsonville, and his wife have died as the result of a motor accident on the Ngauranga Gorge road at about 2.45 this afternoon. • Two five-seater cars collided at a right-angled bend, and Mr Cook’s car went over the bank and was completely wrecked. It ended its career in the stream at the bottom. Mrs Cook, who was sitting beside her husband, who was driving, was killed instantly, and Mr Cook received a fracture of the base of the skull, a broken breast bone and fractures of the right ribs. He died in hospital at 4.30 o’clock. The two children, Joan, aged eight, and William, aged seven, who occupied the back seat, were not injured.
CAR MOUNTS PAVEMENT. WOMAN INJURED AT AUCKLAND,
AUCKLAND, April 13. Consternation was caused in Qgeen Street on Friday evening by a motor car knocking down and injuring a woman in the course of a mad earner.
The car, a small one, was proceeding from the direction of the Post Office. It ©ollided with the buttress of a safety zone in Queen Street, swung across the road, mounted the footpath, grazed a verandah post, and luiocked down Mrs Hilda Burgess, of Grey Lvnn, throwing her against a shop window. Continuing along the pavement the car missed several pedestrians by inches, and at the intersection of Queen and Shortland Streets shot into the road again. A sailor jumped clear find then ran after the vehicle in an attempt to board it. In that he was unsuccessful, as the car, which contained two men and a girl, was now travelling rapidly up Queen Street. It turned into Wyndham Street, and was lost to sight. Mrs Burgess, the woman who was knocked down, was taken to hospital suffering from bruises and shock. No arrest has vet been made.
