HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, April 12. An attempt was mado during tho week to burglariously enter a local billiard saloon. , The Hautero Riflo Club’s euchre party and danco on Wednesday night was greatly enjoyed by all present. Eucliro prizes wero won by Aliss L. Rusling and Air Stewart, and tho consolation trophies by Air Butt and Aliss Doris Butt. Mr J. Mathio, who has been on holiday in Masterton, returned to Otaki on Wednesday. Air and Airs A. D. Webster will leave for Syndcy next month, but Turoa, their son, will not make tho trip till after the Otaki races. Mr and Airs W. H. Percival havo decided to again take up their residence in Otaki and will reside at Tasman Beach. Unfortunately, Air Percival is in very indifferent health, but a roccnt trip to Rotorua and other places of interest had a beneficial effect. At tho weokly meeting of tho management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council, it was reported that Air C. Noes, of AJanakau, had retired from the secretaryship of tho Hui Alai Football Club. The council’s secretary (Air J. Casey) referred to Afr Necs's long services to football in Alanakau and throughout the district, and suggested that in recognition of these lie be granted a complimentary pass for tho season. This was agreed to, on tho motion of Air F. Robinson (Foxton), seconded by Air A. Richards (Shannon). A poll of the ratepayers of tho Te Horo Riding on tho proposal of the Horowhenua County Council to raise a loan of £I3OO for the purpose of constructing a traffic bridge in tho Otaki Gorge, to be known as tho Waihoanga bridge, was taken yesterday and aroused a deal of interest, the voting being 162 in favour of and 27 against. During tho past few days Otaki has been visited by Dominion Aluscum representatives wlio have been studying the rafter patterns of tho Alaori church with a view to preserving tho main types of decoration in the new Dominion Aluseum. Photographs havo boon taken by the director, Air W. R. B. Oliver, and Mr Hoberlcy (Ngatiawa tribe) who is a Alaori carver and in chargo of Alaori renovation, have been making copies of patterns. Air W. J. Phiilipps lias been specialising on Maori plaiting and basket work, and with tho assistance of Air Hcberley has delivered a Alaori art lecture to tho pupils of the Alaori College. Air Phiilipps has also received much now and usoful information on Alaori basket work in Otaki and inter--esting data lias been recoived from Air R. R. Tahiwi (senior), and Mr and Airs P. Rikihana, Mrs Rchua and others. Air W. H. Wills and Air P. P. Tahiwi, of tho Alaori College, havo kindly enabled much of tho researches on tho Church and on Alaori plaiting to bo carried out. At a meeting of tho Otaki Ladies’ Hockey Association it was reported that tho Raukawa. Club had hold a meeting, while it was stated that the teams wero likely to enter from tho northern end. Paraparaumu had written stating their willingness to join the association, while it was expected that. Otaki and To Horo would also enter teams. At tho annual meeting of tho Alen s Hockey Association, Air H. Nicholson, president, was in the chair. The election of officers resulted Patron, Mr F. S. Easton; president, Air H. (ro-olocted) ; vice-presidents, Alessrs W. ICirker, D.' S. Mackenzie, H. J. Palmer, junr., Harold Cockrell, Frank Howell, C. F. Atmore and S Worsfoid; seorotary and treasurer, Mr B. Knox (a hearty voto of thanks was accorded Air Thorpe for past sorvices, ho signifying his intention that he did not wish to seek re-election for tho secretaryship). Tho mattor of forming a Referees Association was left to Mr Y. Alorgan to attend to. It was reported that Otaki, lo Horo, Levin and Manakau would enter senior teams, and Otaki, Te Horo, Paraparaumu, and Lovin junior teams. Alessrs H. O. Whitchouso, V. Alorgan and A. Adsett wero appointed representatives’ selectors. It was decided to grant Levin permission to hold a five-aside tournament, and to start the shield fixtures on April 30th. Tho Green Cup will be awarded for a knock-out competition. It was agrcea that tho name “Otaki Hockey Association ’ bo altered to “Horowhenua Hockey Association” and, if necessary, to apply to the N.Z. Association to become an association independent of Alanawatu. A trophy for junior competition was offered by Alessrs F. S. Easton and H.- Nicholson, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the donors.
