SHANNON
(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON,, April 12. Owing to tho very wet morning, the match arranged between a team of six, croquet players from Levin and six local players on the Shannon green! had to be postponed. Rain cleared off sufficiently, however, to allow several games to be played in the morning and after lunch (which was served in the pavilion) tho usual Wednesday afternoon competition was enjoyed. Airs Ward was the winner on the aggregate. Mrs Kaye, of Inglewood, was the guest of her sister Airs J. Lester, Shannon, during the week. At the annual meeting of the Ven. Bede’s Church, held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Hallam was re-elected as Vicar's Warden, and Mr 11. Easton to tho position of People’s Worden. The vestrymen for the ensuing year are as follow: Messrs B. J. Brann, C. M. Cronquest, J. T. Bovis, H. Woodma6s, and P. Colo. The balance-sheet showed the finances to bo in a satisfactory position. Rev. Mr Young in his report paid a tribute to the good work done by the Ladies’ Guild, eulogising tho work of the various officers and parishioners in tho interest of their church. At tho close of tho meeting supper was provided by tho Ladies’ Guild. .
The social and dance held last Tuesday by the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade, with the object to raise funds to purchase uniforms, was well attended, visitors being present from Levin, Foxton and Tokomaru. Mr H. Curran carried out the duties of M.C., the supper arrangements being in the hands of Mesdames L. Satherloy, F. Buckman and C. Pedersen, to whom the thanks of the brigade members aro due.
