HUT ON MT. EGMONT.
Per Press Association. HAWERA, April 7. The culmination of months of sustained effort was reached during the week-end, when the erection of a hut on Fantham’s ,I’eak, Mt. Egmont, was completed. Situated at an altitude of 6438 feet, tho hut will provide a lofty rendezvous for skiing and general alpine :e----creation. The hut has accommodation with sleeping quarters for ten persons. In altitude the hut. is second only to Haast Hut at Mt. Cook. The portage of the. whole of the materials from Dawson’s Falls (3100 feet) to tlie site of the hut was arranged voluntarily by members of the .Egmont Alpine Club, at whose suggestion the south committee of the Egmont Park Board arranged for the erection of the hut. Interviewed to-dav, Mr L. O. Hooker, president of the Alpine Club, and secretary of the Park Board Committee, said that tho hut should add greatly to the attraction of Mt. Egmont. The cost had been approximately £250, but had it been necessary to pay for portage the outlay would have been in the vicinity c f £6OO.
