FOXTON HARBOUR DISTRICT.
DIFFERENTIAL RATE STRUCK. The Foxton Harbour Board decided this morning to levy the following annual recurring differential special rate on the capital value of all rateable property within the following areas, comprising the Foxton harbour district: Foxton Borough, 7-8 din the £1; Palmerston North Borough, l-10d; Feilding Borough, l-20d; Levin Borough, l-12d; Manawatu County gd; Kairanga County, l-24d. It was anticipated that the rates would yield £IOOO.
In moving the adoption of the resolution Mr M. Perreau expressed regret at the necessity of such a resolution. However, an examination of the finances, and the necessary expenditure for the coming year made it expedient to have more money. Mr J. A. Nash regretted that it was necessary to resort to this course. Mr J. Linklater: We all do. Mr Nash said that the secretary, when sending out the circulars to the local bodies concerned, should state the reasons for the rate and point out the financial position of the board. Mr Kellow: There can be only one reason, and that is the port is being run at a loss. For the next six months our expenditure will bo the same, but the revenue will be only half. Mr Perreau: The extra £IOOO will pay interest and sinking fund. The amount of cargo now coming through the port is saving the people a lot of money, and considerable indirect benefits are being derived. The motion was carried.
