MISSING SHIP.

FATE OF THE IvOBENHAVN. LONDON, April 1. “I am confident that it w.as the Kobenhavn,” said Mr Philip Lindsay, a lay preacher, upon his return from Tristan da Cunha, when referring to a mystery ship wlrich was sighted on January 21, 1929. “She was five-masted, with the main mast broken, and a broad white band around the hull. She was heading directly for the beach from which we were watching, but when seven and a lralf miles away she seemed to drift further eastward. The sea was too rough to use the island’s canvas boat. We saw no sign of life. The ship was carrying only one jib, and the stern was lowest in the water, being immersed to the white band. We last saw the Kobenhavn within a quarter of a mile of the shore. Several things were afterwards washed up, hut no bodies. They must have all been dead before the ship approached Tristan.'’ The Kobenhavn was the only avemasted barque in the world. Tho Danish training ship Kobenhavn, a steel five-masted barque of 3901 tons, the world’s largest sailing ship, left Buenos Aires on December 12, 1929, for Australia, and has not been reported since. In January of last year a five-masted vessel, seemingly in distress, was sighted off Tristan do Cunha. Tho sea was very rough, and the islanders were unable to launch a boat. As tho vessel was not seen again it was supposed that she sank, but no wreckage was found.
