NEW LAND FOUND.
DISCOVERY BY LARSEN. OSLO, Feb. 20. A copyright message announcing the discovery of a new land of which 100 nautical miles of coast were charted by aeroplane, ‘ has been received from Captain Larsen, who said that after the discovery of the Norvegia bank on February 1, Captain Holm and he constantly attempted to investigate by aeroplane the new land supposed to lie in 32deg west. The weather and ice rendered the attempt impossible. The Norvegia then steered southward until February 16, when soundings at 70deg 42min south and 12deg 20min west gave 1325 fathoms, shallowing to 670 fathoms. A long chain of grounded icebergs was sighted, and the vessel approached them. Soundings showed 170 fathoms, decreasing to 125, seeming to indicate a continental shelf from which a submarine plateau of 125 fathoms deep stretched toward the new land, which was discovered early on February 17. The Norvegia stopped at the foot of the ice barrier at a depth of 90 fathoms in 71 deg. south and lldeg. 3lmin west, where a nortli-western point of land lies. Larsen and Holm flew out and charted the west coast to 71deg, 50 min south, lldeg 25min west, where they saw the barrier stretching in a south-westerly direction. They chartered the north side from east-north-eastward to west. Snowstorms and fogs made charting very difficult. The western point of the new land was 1100 ft high, and the eastern part lower, with the ice barrier protruding. The north coast was quite free of ice, tho western partly so. No peak showed above the ice.
