RELIEF COMMITTEE MEETING.
A meeting of the Unemployment Relief Committee was held to-day, Mr J. A. Nash, ALP., presiding. Also present were the Mayor, Air A. J. Graham and Messrs B. J. Jacobs and F. C. Allerby. An apology for absence was received from Mr P. T. Robin-
The chairman stated that at present 43 married men with 117 dependants and 18 single men were registered at the Government bureau as against 29 with 86 dependants and 11 single men at the last meeting on May 25. Air Allerby produced a supplementary list of seven men with 15 dependants.
The chairman enquired what was the position with regard to the Sluggish River Drainage Board’s loan work. The secretary, Mr Lowden, that the board had promised to communicate with him when the loan was raised. He anticipated hearing this week as the board would meet on Thursday. Air Allerby enquired if the committee could get a subsidy on the money raised by tho sacred concerts. He added that he knew of a party which would probably give a concert. Air Lowden stated that he had received complaints from men who had been transferred from the deviation to the Gisborne railway. They had alleged that the living conditions were intolerable and had accordingly given up their jobs. On the suggestion of the chairman, it was decided to investigate the complaints. The committee adjourned until June 25th.
