CANON FANCOURT

APPOINTED TO AUCKLAND VICAR OF ST. AIARY’S.

(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, June 10. The appointment of Canon William Fancourt, of Palmerston North, as Vicar of St. Mary’s Parish, in place of Canon Percival James, who recently resigned, has been decided upon by the wardens and vestry of St. Mary s Pro-Cathedral, Parnell, and the Diocesan Selection Committee. The invitation has been definitely accepted by Canon Fancourt. ' Nominally lie will have to give three months’ notice to the parish of All Saints’, Palmerston North. . , , a St. Mary’s parish has progressed rapidly under the guidance of Canon James and it is considered fortunate that such a gifted churchman as Canon Fancourt has been secured to take Ins place. At present Rev. P. T. Williams is acting vicar of St. Mary’s Cathedral, which position he has held for the past few weeks since Canon James’s departure.

Canon Fancourt is a New Zealander, being born at the Lower Hutt, Wellington, the son of Archdeacon I aneourt, and come 9 of a clerical family, being the fifth clergyman in succession. He was educated at a private school, Woodcote House, in Wellington, and at the Wanganui. Collegiate School, Gonville, and Cauis College, Cambridge, taking his B.A. degree with honours in 1903 and M.A. in 1907He was trained at the Clergy Training School, Cambridge, and ordained by the Bishop of Liverpool, England, deacon in 1904, and priest in 1905. He was assistant curate of St. Jude s Liverpool, England, from 1904 to 1907, assistant curate of St. Thomas’s, Wellington South, 1907-1909, Vicar of St. Hilda’s, Island Bay, 1909-1912; Vicar of St. Thomas’s, Wellington South, 1912-1924 ; Vicar of All Saints’, Palmerston North, 1924. He has been chaplain to the Bishop of Wellington from 1919, Canon of St. Paul’s Cathedral Church 'since 1925, a member of the Standing' Committee of the Diocesan Synod from 1919 and of the Board of Nomination from 1924. He has twice been elected a representative for the diocese of Wellington on the General Synod.
