TOWN BOARD MONTHLY MEETING

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, Aug. 21. Tho ordinary monthly meeting lot the Rongotea Town Board was held in tho Town Board room on Monday evening, when there were present: Messrs. L. H. Yarrall (chairman), W. J. Croucher, A. Treakner and S. J. Teaz.

A letter was received from a firm in reply tp one from the board as to overgrowing - blackberries on property held in Rongotea. It was intimated that the matter would recoive attention when their manager resumed duties after absence through sickness. Leavo of absence from tho meeting was granted to Mr E. J. Arnptt. A general rate of 5d in the £1 on all rateablo property, calculated on tho unimproved value of such property, was levied. A sanitation rato of 25s was levied on tho occupier of every rateablo property in tho Rongotea town district. Accounts aggregating £4O lid were passed for payment. The chairman brought up the subject of local daylight saving for consideration, but the suggestion received a good deal of opposition and nothing was done. A deputation consisting of Messrs. W. J. Amies, J. C. Glover, T. Fraser, J. Gould and A. Maden waited on tho board concerning tho Post Offico clock, which lias been shifted from its former position above tho posting boxes to the corner window of tljo building. Tho position in which the clock is now situated is obscure and tho clock is of very little public benefit. Thero is no light over the clock at night, and it is impossible to ascertain the time without tho aid of a match or a torch. The deputation was headed by Mr Amies who requested the Town Board to use its influence with tho Post and Telegraph Department to havo tho clock placed in tho window of the porch facing tho square, a position which was considered t|o be most suitable for observation frpm any portion of tho town. Mr Glover also spoko regarding tho inconvenience tho shifting of the clock had caused and also urged that something bo done to have tho clock restored to a' more suitablo position. The chairman said that the board would do its best to have the request granted and tho following resolution was carried: “That tho postal .authorities be asked tio install the clock in a nuoro suitablo position than it now occupies, and that a responsible officer of the department be appointed to interview the local body in order to discuss the matter.

Tho Works committee reported that the work of concreting the water-tablo from Mr A. Maden’s corner to the Piost Offico had been completed most satisfactorily. NOTES. Tho friends of Mrs Nelson Scott will regret to learn that she is at present in a privato hospital where she has undergone a serious operation. Every good wish for a speedy recovery is extended to her. Mr A. Goldfinch is now reported to be making good progress after his serious illness.

“Buck’’ O’Connor, tho footballer who was injured at Awahuri, has now returned homo from hospital. Mrs H. Schreiber is spending a holiday at Ha\)'era. Mr and Mrs Chas Thorne, of Nelson, are at present enjoying a holiday in the Manawatu district and will bo spending a few days with Mrs H. E. Fieldhouso, a sister of Mrs Thorne. Miss Lorna Fieldhouse and Miss M. Palmer are spending a holiday together at Nelson.

Tho winners of tho cuchro prizes at tho weekly function of the Social Club last week were Miss Jill Blower and Mr W. G. Baylis. Enthusiasm is still being maintained in tho boxing school, there being a large attendance at the usual weekly gathering held in the Town Hall on Monday evening.

Mr Don Scott is at present, spending a holiday at Wellington. Miss E. Phillips is also in Wellington on holiduy.
