RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE

(By “Binocular.”)

Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club fixture on Saturday. Dannevirke R.C. holds a meeting next Wednesday. The Dannevirke Hunt Club comes, in on the succeeding day. The Taranaki Hunt Club races on September 1 with the Marton J.C. attending it on the sth.

September invariably finds the new season well under way and 14 days’ racing will materialise next month. District enthusiasts will be well catered for, there being, in addition to the Marton Club meeting, a two days’ fixture at Wanganui and a one day meeting at Awapuni —that of the Manawatu Hunt Club. Dumblane, who broke down badly at the start of his race at Riccarton on. Saturday, cost 1000 guineas last season. He has won only ono race. Fifty-one horses earned money at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s-, meeting last week. The list was headed by Wiltshire, £ll7O, and Nukumai, £lOls, after whom there was a drop to Craigmore, £585, Tuki, £560, and Bisox, £525.

The following were the principal winning owners at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting last week: —Messrs T. Wilson, £1170; J. M. Samson, £1045; S. G. Davidrpn, £1015; L. C. Hazlott, £585 ; R. Hicks, £525; F. R. Waller, £400; H. D. Matthews, £320; W. J. Craig, £290; , W. H. Gaisford, £280; C. F. Vallancc, £270; F. Ehrliorn, £260; C. T. Keeble, £255; and W. H. Ballinger, £250. Figuring in the list of owners who received smaller amounts was Mr C. Louisson, who annexed £6O as a result of a second by Kilmiss. Riding honours at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting were widely distributed. W. J. Bpwdcn, R. Reed, J. Kerr and S. Henderson wero successful twice, while the jockeys who rode < one winner were E. Shaw, J. Procter, L. A. Pine, R. C. Syme, E. Mackio, A. McCormac, A. E. Ellis, D. O’Connor, J. W. Jennings, L. G. Morris, R. J. Mackie, R. McTavish, C. Dawson, L. Hunt, B. H. Morris, and P. Powell.

F. Trilford and A. Trilford were the most successful trainers at the Grand National meeting, with four winner, Jovial Tuki, Town Bank and Royal Fashion. A. M. Wright (Nukumai twice) and J. Cassells (Craigmore twice) wero next with two wins each. The following trainers each led in a winner: R. Ellis (Diana’s Lad), F. Ehrhorn (Nucleus), G. J. Pino (Noteworthy), R. Syme (Wiltshire), J. Brown (Bisox), G. New (Pangolin), P. T. Hogan (Captain Sarto), A. Griffen (Smithereens), G. Jonek (Chelono), E. Penman (Marjoram), S. G. Ware (Narrative), R. C. Keeper (Carinthia), F. R. Waller (Rangi Sarto), A. Goodman (Black Mint), S. J. Reid (Historic), G. A. Fielding (Royal Saxon). . i Saxby was the most successful sire _of winners at the meeting, Graigmore winning a double and Royal Saxon adding another to his score. Manchineel had a double winner, Nukumai; Lucullus was represented by Nucleus and Carinthia; Sarto by Captain Sarto and Rangi Sarto, and Catmint by Marjoram and Black Mint, while the following sires bred one winner: Gay Lad (Diana’s Lad), Paper Money (Noteworthy), Day Comet (Wiltshire), Merry Moment (Jovial), Bisogne (Bisox), Panmure (Pangolin), Arrowsmith (Smithereens) Quin Abbey (Tuki), Leighton (Chelono), Archietown (Town Bank), Solforino (Narrative), Royal Mac (Royal Fashion), and Nassau (Historic). Tho progeny of thirtysix sires earned money, the biggest being Day Comet £1195, Manchineel £lOls, Saxby £795, Sarto £625, Lucullus £625, Quin Abbsy £560, Bisogne £525 and Catmint £425. Good as Gold and Rioyal Head have joined tho regulars at Kensington under the supervision of H. Fielder (says a Sydney writer). They arrived from New Zealand a few days ago. Good as Gold, who is a five-year-iold by Paper Money from Kiilara,'won four races during the season just concluded, his last success being in the Shorts Hanadicap, six furlongs, at tho Southland R.C. summer meeting. Royal Head has yet to score. It appears that Royal Darnion was unlucky in tho August Handicap at Riccarton on Thursday. Green, his rider, lost an iron at tho start, and after regaining it lost the other iron altogether during the race. Ranui was the leader over tho last fence in the Beaufort Steeplechase at Riccarton, but his saddle slipped on landing, and his rider was mot of much assistance to him afterwards'. If this had not happened, it is stated that he might have beaten Tuki.

THE LUCK OF RACING

FRENCH TURF INCIDENT.

Tho victory of Cri de Guerre in this year’s Grand Prix de Paris serves to bring out in pointed form the luck that surrounds racing. When a yearling the colt was bought for 18,000 francs. In the early stage of his three-year-old career it is related that he was hired by tho Marquis de Saint Sauvour to make the running for a supposed crack (Kantar) in a race at Longchamps, and he made such a race _of it with the favourite as to bring him into note. The colt was placed on offer to a prominent English trainer at something like £4OOO, but nio business resultod in that quarter and he was eventually purchased by Lord Derby and Mr Ogden Mills for 250,000 francs, plus a further 25,000 francs out of tho first race he won of tho value of 50,000 francs. It is stated that Cri de Guerre was ostensibly bought to lead Kantar in his work. Something happened to the latter, and Cri de Guerre was thus given the opportunity of earning honours in tho Grand Prix de Paris, and he scored a sensational victory in the leading three-year-old event of tho French turf. The accidont that happened to Kantar (writes “Audax” in Horso and Hound) was probably the most lucky incident that over happened in racing. Tho winner’s portion of the stako attached tto the Grand Prix de Paris was 775,000 francs. '

RACING CONFERENCE.

COMPLAINT FROM AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, Aug. 21.

“I seldom refer to Racing Conference affairs other than with words of compliment, but I feel constrained to offer some adverse comment to-day,” remarked the Hion. E. W. Alison, president of the Takapuna Jockey Club, at the annual meeting. Air Alison said that members were aware that certain changes had been effected, placing in the hands cf an executive committee many of the powers hitherto vested in tho president. Had this committee been properly representative of the metropolitan clubs and country clubs lof the Dominion, all would have been well, but all was not well—far from it. Had Sir Georgo Clifford been in his accustomed place at the recent conference meeting ho felt confident that tho regrettable episode upon which the president of the Auckland Racing Club had forcibly and with good reason expressed himself would not have been permitted to occur. He alluded, of course, to the circumstance ±hat upon this committco nominees of the metropolitan clubs of Canterbury, Wellington, Dunedin and even Southland and Hawke’s Bay had found seats to tho total exclusion of the Auckland Racing Club. It was stated that this lamentable result had been brought about by a misreading of the rules; whether that was so or not it. was only too obvious that for some unexplained and wholly indefensible reason a set was made against the Auckland Racing Club, the premier metropolitan club in the Dominion. Had the metropolitan clubs been given tho voting power which it was contended tho rules entitled them to, tile mischief complained of would probably not havo happened. But bo that as it may, what was done constituted a deliberate affront and indignity to Auckland and reflected anything but crodit upon thoso responsible. An inexcusable impropriety of this kind tended to create a feeling of hostility towards tho New Zealand Racing Conference which if not overcome must inevitably lead. disintcgratiion and disunity, a condition of racing affairs which they should all deeply deplore and which tho conference representatives should exercise their best endeavours to avoid*
