CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

AIEETING OF COUNCIL,

The monthly meeting of the council of tho Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr AI. A. Eliot'! presiding. Also present were Alessrs D. Watson, T. E. French, J. H. Stevens, A. Dawson, A. P. Stuart, A. S. Faire, J. J. O’Shea and Professor Peren. Apologies for absence were received from Alessrs Al. H. Oram, G. I. AlcGregor and G. Bennett.

WOODVILLE TELEPHONE LIST. In reply to the council’s suggestion that a ballot of the Woodville telephone exchange subscribers be taken in order to ascertain which telephone directory—Afa.yberton or Palmerston North—was desired by them, the Chief Postmaster at Palmerston North (Mr A. Dawson) wrote advising that the secretary of the department had informed him that, as the Woodville business people had already expressed their opinion through their Chamber of Commerce, it was regretted that the department oould not agree 'to any further action in the matter.

In reply to a question by Air Stevens, Air Dawson stated that there were twice as many toll calls from Palmerston North to Woodville as from Alasterton to Woodville. Woodville subscribers were on both lists, but were supplied with the Alasterton list. It was decided to suggest to the department that Woodville subscribers be issued with whatever list they desired.

EMPIRE SHOPPING WEEK. The British Manufacturers’ Association of New Zealand wrote enquiring whether it could count on active support locally for 1929 Empire Shopping Week. Methods by. which this could he done, the writers stated, were by displaying British Goods, window dressing competitions and a Press campaign. It was suggested that a committee be set up locally to super;vise all arrangements. On the suggestion of the president, the matter was referred to the’ Drapers’ Federation.

WARNING SIGNALS

Regarding the council’s representations concerning the desirability of warning signals at the railway crossings in the Square, the stationmaster (Mr J. J. O'Shea) advised that the matter had been referred to the head office for consideration, and that a reply would bo forwarded in due course.
