THE RABBIT PEST.
DRAINAGE BOARD CONCERNED
BANKS OF DRAINS WEAKENED
At the meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board to-day reference was made to the menace constituted by rabbits. It was stated that a very serious position would arise in the future if the rabbits were allorved to increase to such an extent that the banks of the board’s drains became honevcombed with burrows.
“We have been in the habit of trapping rabbits along tho banks, but. the pest- is increasing on properties adjoining the board’s banks,” said tho chairman, Mr J. Liggins, sen. “They are getting ahead of us and are constituting a real danger. They must be kept down.” : Mr H. J. T. Hume suggested that a letter be sent to the farmers in the district concerned asking them 'to take steps to eradicate the pest.. It should be pointed out »Lhnt otherwise <i rabbit board, entailing extra rates, would have to be formed to prevent the banks from becoming honeycombed. This, put in the form of a motion, was seconded by Mr 11. Akers and carried.
