FAILURE OF SERUM
BUNDABERG TRAGEDY. ANTISEPTICS ABSENT. REPORT OF COMMISSION. (United Press Association—-By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received June 14, 10.45 a.m. CANBERRA, Juno 14. Tho Royal Commission blames the absence of antiseptics in tho toxin anti-toxin for the deaths of twelve children at Bundabcrg, Queensland, after inoculation by Dr. E. G. Thomson, on January 27. The commission, whose report was tabled, recommends that biological products iu which the growth of pathogenic bacteria is possible, should not ho issued in rubber-capped containers for repeated use, unless thcro is present sufficient concentration of tiro antiseptic to inhibit bacterial growth. Tho commission finds that the serum used by Dr. Thomson was properly prepared and sterile, but that if contained no antiseptic and no warning had lately been issued, which was an unsound procedure. Dr. Thomson used his fingers instead of sterile forceps in fixing the needle to the nozzle of tho syringe, giving opportunity for contamination. Further possibility of contamination arose from the serum’s exposure to the air.
The Minister of Health proposed to continue the investigations into the organisms which caused the deaths.
