STRIKE OF COOKS
CLOSE WATCH BY OWNERS. PROTECTION FOR ESSENTIAL SERVICES. AORANGI NOT AFFECTED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). Received May 24, 10.15 a.m. SIDNEY, May 24. The shipowners are watching closely the trend of events in connection with the cooks’ strike. If the strike extends immediate steps will be taken to organise means whereby the essential services can be maintained. In such a condition oi affairs there would be protection from the Federal Government’s civil ana military forces. . Tlio fear was expressed overnight that the Aorangi, which is on Australian articles, would become involved .on her arrival to-day, but the owners have given the assurance that no such action is intended by the owners. The chief cook of the idle steamer Karoola states that the rank and file of the Cooks’ Union have already rejected the roster system, a ballot having been held. The men are now objecting to their own Mussohm-like executive. . TRADES COUNCIL ON TRIAL. MELBOURNE, May 23. When the conference of the Australian Council of Trades Unions and Maritime Unions begins to-morrow oeitain union officials will demand that the council either definitely remains m charge of the cooks’ dispute, with or without Mr Tudehope’s authority, or retire from the dispute altogether. It is now recognised that the Australian Council of Trades Unions is on its trial, and if it fails to insist upon its authority to conduct the dispute, it will have been dealt a blow from which it will be unable to recover.
