COUNCIL ABOLITION.

NEW SOUTH WALES DISPUTE. PREMIER’S EXPLANATION. WHAT DOEs"~IT MEAN? SYDNEY, April 1. The Premier, Mr J. Lang, has revived the question of abolition of tho Legislative Council in a statement to tho press, in which he denies that ho ever attempted to deceive the Governor or ever gave him an assurance that th s last batch of twenty-five appointments were not for tlie purpose of abolishing the Upper House. He quotes a letter ho wrote to the Governor on December 4 in reply to queries by -His Excellency, in which lie says that he did not say, nor did he give the Governor to understand that it was not tho intention of the Government to abolish tho Council during this Parliament, nor did ho state or give the Governor tho impression that it was tho Government’s intention to do so, adding that this question had not been considered by tlie Government. The letter further informed tho Governor that the appointment of tho twenty-five members would not mean putting an end to tho Council’s value as a deliberative and revising Chamber, and would not menu that measures would be forced through without discussion. Somo newspapers are asking what Mr Lang’s explanation really amounts to. —Press Association.
