CHINESE WARS.
PEKIN MENACED. SHARP FIGHTING FEARED. ADVANCE OF MUKDEN FORCES. Received April 3, 8.55 a.m. PEKIN, April 2. Prominent Chinese are seeking safety in the Legation quarter, due to tho increased fear throughout the City that negotiations for the transfer of Pekin from the Nationalist defenders to tho opposing Coalition army, which principally is controlled by Marshall Chang Tso Lin, may fail, in which case there is likely to be sharp fighting for the possession of the city. The Nationalists are withdrawing some troops from the city, but only tlie less disciplined, soldiers are being permitted to leave, while picked troops are forming a company ring around the capital. Motor travellers arriving at Tientsin from Pekin state that tlie road is swarming with ail almost continuous procession of Mukden soldiers advancing on Pekin, while parallel columns line either side of tho road. Fifteen trains are daily leaving Pekin for Nankow and Kalgan, carrying General Kuo Min Chun’s troops and equipment. Troops are believed also to bo moving cross country on Nankow, with tho object of cutting off tho remaining Kuo Min Chun forces from tho capital.—A. and N.Z. cable.
