MUNICIPAL BAND

VISIT TO EXHIBITION. HOUSE-TO-HOUSE CANVASS FOR FUNDS. Tho meeting called last evening to consider raising funds, by small subs -iptions, towards sending tho Palmerston North Band to tho Dunedin and South’ Seas Exhibition was well attended. Mr .J. A. IJlash, M.P., presided and explained that the meeting was really tho outcome of a suggestion made at a previous meeting by Mr J. Dick that thero might be a canvass for funds made of the various streets of the borough. After talking the mattor ovor it had been thought that tho best method would be to havo cards printed, with Is tho minimum, subscription, and to have volunteers take the cards around. If the town could be thoroughly organised, Mr Nash was of opinion, a fairly good sum of money would be collected in this way. The cost of sending tho band to Dunedin would be £4OO. It seemed quite a lot, but it was not really. There was a good deal of outlay which, in tho end, would probably exceed £4OO. lii Lieutenant Buckley, proceeded the speaker, they had one of the most able musicians in New Zealand. Tho people would be surprised, ho believed, at what the band would attain at Dunedin, and this would bo solely due to Lieutenant Buckley’s effective instruction. He also believed that the band members would bo disappointed if they did not annex the Quickstep Contest at tho competition, and in tho event of success credit would be due to, tho splendid tuition of SergeantMajor Bell. Mr Nash went on to state that ho, himself, was taking up a collection among the business jieople of the town, and to dato he had sesured in the vcinity of £4O, which lie considered indicative of tho public’s realisation that they owed something to tho members of the band for what they received and of tlio necessity of the band going to Dunedin. Ho could truthfully say that he had not yet received a refusal. Tho speaker stated that, before the band departed, thero would be two concerts; and there could perhaps be a Flower Day, which might not about £2O, and also a Badge Day, with badges retailed at Is each. He would like to impress on tho public, he said, when the band went away, they would havo to take blank cheques with them, and these cheques would have to be honoured. It had been agreed, added Mr Nash, that the band in conjunction with the Competitions Society, should hold an art union after the exhibition, and so wipe out its indebtedness. But that was really apart from tho present proposition. What w r as wanted now was ready cash and helpers in the house-to-house canvass. He thought that everyone would bo able to give at least Is; there was no restriction, however, on the amount that one could donate.

A largo number of volunteers then came forward for a card, on which is the name of a street ,and columns showing the names of donors and the amount of tho subscription. There are, of course, others who probJbly could not attend the meeting last night and who. would bo willing to canvass. Those desirous of doing so may get in communication with Mr J. Dick, who is secretary, and treasurer of the movement.

Further donations to the Municipal Band aro thankfully acknowledged by Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., as follow: Messrs Hankins, Fitzherbert and Abraham, Messrs Ongley and Tremaine ,Ford Motors, Manawatu, each £2 2s; Messrs Smith, Ritchie and Co., Messrs Clayton and Robinson, Messrs Golufinch and Cousins, Messrs Bagnall and Keeble, each £1 Is; Mr C.
