LABOUR DAY.
LARGE NUMBERS LEAVE TOWN
'Weather conditions tor Labour Day did not, look too promising early this morning lint, fortunately, rain held off and pleasure-seekers did not have their enjoyment ruined. In compliance with the law, business establishments observed a close holiday and, in consequence, there was little activity in the town itself. A large number of residents journeyed to Fox ton for the motor sport,', there, while others went by car and train to the races at Wellington, AY averley and Waipawa. Bowlers were present in force on their respective greens, pairs tournaments being held by the Palmerston North, Northern and Terrace End Clubs. Numerous picnic parties left the town. At the racecourse members of the, Y.M.C.A. and their friends assembled under the direction of. Mr E. 1). Wycherley, chairman of the social committee. A sports programme was scheduled for this afternoon. Delegates attending the Bible class eonlerence in connection with the Presbyterian Church also intended holding a sports gathering on the Boys’ High School grounds this afternoon. Athletic sports wero held at Levin and Dnnnevirke, the well-known distance runner, Jl. A. Rose, competing in the latter town, hut there were no competitors from Palmerston North at ithcr gathering. The weather is tine, hut overpast for the holiday. A large crowd has gone to Trentham for the races. The only other attraction is a sports gathering in Newtown Park.
