SCHOOL SUBSIDIES.

ON VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS.

A new scale of subsidies, payable on voluntary contributions, in respect of schools in tho Dominion, has been gazetted. Subsidies may be approved on contributions available for the following purposes: (a) Jn tho case of public schools, including district high school: (1) Fuel for school use; water for school use, exclusive of water for school baths; vacuum cleaners for school use; utensils and permanent apparatus used in connection with tho provision of hot lunches for children. (2) Extension and improvement of the school grounds. (3) Erection and improvement of buildings used for school purposes. (4) The provisions of special furniture, apparatus, and appliances for school use (including pictures and works of art for school decoration). (5) Tho provision of apparatus and material for hand-work or manual instruction, and the payment of instructors in such subjects who are not on the regular staffs of schools. (6) The initial expenditure for tho provision of apparatus and equipment of a permanent character for the promotion of organised games, physical education and recreation of tho pupils. (7) the establishment and maintenance of school and class libraries. (8) Tho provision of school flags and the purchase of New Zealand ensigns to be flown thereon.

(b) In tho case of secondary schools: (1) The purposes specified under the foregoing sub-clause (a), with the exception of paragraph (1). (2) The provision of school sites and buildings as are approved by the Minister. (3) The .provision of necessary equipment and material.

(e) In the case of technical schools or classes: (1) Tho purposes specified under the foregoing sub-clauso (b). (2) The establishment of scholarships. (3) The payment of part-time teachers. (4) Such other similar purposes as tho Minister may approve. No part of any contribution on which subsidy is paid is to be utilised for school prizes, trophies, or entertainments.
