SUBSCRIPTIONS BY NATIVES.
GISBORKE, Jan. 6. An ardent advocate of education, for the Maori people, the late Mir Parafene Ngata, during tho laßb few years of his life, conceived the idea of establishing a Maori echolarship i'oir the Waiapu dktrict. Owing to the geueroiaty of the East Coast natives, there is now every prospect of the late Mr Ngata's scheme being realised. The leading Maoris of the district have been much interested in the proposal, and recently a prominent chief bequeathed a eum of £OOO toward the initiation of a fund. Thi9 has been augmented by further donations, including a substantial sum from the Tokomaru Bay native*, as ah earnest of their intentions ti> support the scheme.
