AVOIDING A COLLISION. MOTORISTS’ FORTUNATE ESCAPE. OTOROIIANGA. Dec. 5. A narrow escape from death was experienced by a party, consisting of Air J. A. Orntsby, Mr and Mrs J. Belcher, and Miss Dora Ilall, when motoring from Olorohanga to Arapuni and Iloraliora yesterday. About 15 miles beyond Te Awaniutn the road takes an easy turn. Mr Ormsby was driving on his correct side, when, it is stated, a car, estimated to be travelling at 35 miles an hour, approached on its wrong side. In an endeavour to avoid a head-on collision Mr Ormsby swerved across the road, which is fully 20ft. wide at the spot, and put on his breaks hard. The car struck some scrub, fell over the edge of the road, und rolled over and over until it reached the bottom, fully 50ft. below. The passengers were fortunate in escaping with bruises and cuts. Tlio hood of jho car was squashed flat, and the wheels pressed close up to the body. The party were taken on to Cambridge by a friendly motorist, and reached Otoroliangu in the evening.
