LEVEL CROSSING DANGER.
BUS DRIVER PROSECUTED. PASSED IN FRONT OF TRAIN. HAMILTON. Dec. 5. A bus driver named E. H. Wilkins, when returning from the recent races, at about 7.30 p.m., failed to notice the near upproaelt of a train at tlio Victoria street crossing. A collision was avoided by only a few yards. Wilkins was charged to-day with failing to keep a vigilant look-out. when approaching a railway crossing, and with crossing over tho fine in front of_ an on-coming train. Mr If. T. Gillies, for the Crown, remarked that the ease was not a bad one, ns Wilkins was undoubtedly tired after a hard day’s work, lie had the reputation of being a careful driver. On behalf of defendant, Mr A. L. lompkius mentioned that owing to a loosened bolt the vehicle was making a fair amount of noise, preventing Wilkins hearing the warning bell. Defendant was fined £l, with costs totalling £3 10s.
