Time, 2.51. THE LATE A. J. McFLINN. lI'IS CAREER IN TIIE SADDLE. To go through A. J. McFlinn’s career ia decidedly interesting, and just how many times he saluted the judge a winner or how much stake money the horses under him won, it would take some time to determine (says the Times and Sporting News). Ho •probably had no idea himself, but it is certain that he had more than a fair share of success in the saddle, and though he never really topped the list, of jockeys on the flut, ho was credited with heading the list of hurdle horsemen for three of the few years that ho undertook to ride over obstacles. Among isorno of his principal successes in the saddle throughout Now Zealand may be mentioned: Amylhas.—Two Champion Plates at Trentham, two Gold Cups at Trentham, Awapuni Gold Cup (Palmerston North), New Zealand Eclipse Stakes and Flying 10.9 (Wanganui), Ilozlett Memorial (Dunedin). Canterbury Cup (lliecarton), and Marlborough Stakes (Rieearton), which event was started by H.R.H. the Prince

of Wales. Silver Link. —Manawatu Stakes (Palmerston North), Hawke’s Bay Stakes (Hastings), New Zealand Challenge Stake; (Trentham), Easter Handicap and A.’R.C. Railway Handicap (Ellerslie). . Queen March. —A.R.C. Welcome Stakes (Ellerslie.) Income. —Mit-chelson Cup and Summer Cup (Ellerslie.) Matatane. —Great Northern Oaks (Ellorslie.) Parody.—Great Northern Oaks (Ellerslie.) Bonnie Maid. —Great Northern St. Ledger (Ellerslie.) Humbug.—Groat Northern Champagne Stakes (Ellerslie.) Toatere. —St. George’s Handicap (Ellerslie.) h Te Kara. —Autumn Handicap (Ellerslie.) Arch Salute. Parliamentary Handicap (Trentham.) Gazique.—Autumn Handicap (Avondale.) Roseday.—Auckland Plate and A.R.C. Handicap (Ellerslie.) Pompey.—Avondale Guineas (Avondale.) Alteration. —Dead heat in the Cup with Blue Cross (Avondale.) Cynic.—Great Northern Hurdles (Ellerslie.) Tim Doolnn. —Great National Steeplechase (Riccarton.)

The late horseman never had a mount in the New Zeuland Cup, whilst his two mounts in the Auckland Cup, Income and Battle Song, each earned third money, lie did not win a Derby, in which he hud two rides, while when defeated on Amythas in the Stead Memorial at Riccarton, Winning Hit (the. winner) was caught in a good mood on the day, and put up a time record for the race. On Silver Link, prior to winning the Railway Handicap, lie registered two seconds in that event at Ellerslie —one to Tigritiya and one to Statuette. Ho also filled a similar position on Gazique when Nnnna won in her year, and so far tho big handicap sprint at Ellerslie is concerned, McFlinn had" six rides, including one win, three seconds and a third.

Among other victories gained may be mentioned Golden Glass in tho Nelson Plate nt Ellerslie, when McFlinn, on the eon of Marble Arch downed a hot proposition in Glenross. Also Te Kara when that horse surprised most people by “downing” tiie sprinters at Te Rapa last month. While in Australia a great finish between Tim Doolun (McFlinn) and Guncap (Bird) in the Dingley Steeplechase at Melbourne Hunt Club races (Mooney Valley) ended in . a dead heat. The Now Zealander thought he won, and refused an offer from Bird to save £2 as they pulled up. ■ During his time as a horseman, no less than three owners saw fit to retain MeFlinn’s services, G. L. Stead and tho late, E. Short for two years each at different periods, while F. S. Easton held a retainer for two of the years the Aucklander was associated with the Manawatu owner's homes. For Mr Stead, Tim Doolan arid Tho Pole were among successes achieved; for Mr Short, 'Demos, Parorangi, Ilastie and Sonnino, and for Mr Easton Amythas, Rouex and Co. The Auckland District Racing Committee passed a resolution recording profound regret at the death of tho jockey A. J. McFlinn, and placing on record his clean and honourable life as a licensed jockey, which was an object lesson to the members of liis profession,',,*,
