TRAINS DELAYED
BREAKING OF AN AXLE. EXPRESSES RUNNING LATE. TE AWAMUTU, July 22. The breaking of tho uxlo of an eightton copl wagon near Lake road flag station last, night' resulted In the hold-up of the Main Trunk express for several hours. The eoal waggon was part of a train proceeding just ahead of tho south-bound express, and the trouble occurred in a deep cutting and on a sharp bend. Relief gangs quickly assembled, but the work was hampered greatly because of the position the train was in. The south-bound express and also a special immigrants’ express were held up at Ohaupo and the north-bound express was held up at Te Knwau. Meanwhile several goods trains were blocked in a siding at Te Awnrnutu, so that, when eventually die yriain line was cleared some trouble was experienced in getting the expresses clear on the main line. It was not uni it 6 a.in. that the congestion was relieved and flie main line open again for regular traffic. Tt was a bitterly cold night, snow appearing on the l’irongia mountain to the lowest level seen Ibis winter.
Inquiry at the local railway station elicited the information that tho train from Auckland was running übout 65 hours late.
