VERY COLD NIGHT.

LOW TEMPERATURE REGISTERED. Last night was one of the coldest experienced in Palmerston North this winter, and the thermometer registered a minimum temperature of 27 degrees. In some parts of trie town this morning the ground was heavily coated with hoar frost, but in other quarters there was none. FALLS OF SNOW. SMALL AMOUNT IN DUNEDIN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 21. The weather last night and to-day has been bitterly cold, with snow and sleet showers at fairly frequent intervals. The hills surrounding the city are coated with snow, and the higher portions of the city have a light coating. SEVERAL INCHES NEAR TAIHAPE. TAIHAPE, July 21. On Saturday night there was a fairly heavy fall of snow in the district between Ohnkuno and llihitahi, and lighter falls in die Taihapo district. Except for the higher country, where a heavy fall was experienced, the snow did not lie long: but 011 Sunday night a very heavy fall occurred. and snow fell till 10 o'clock this morning. the whole countryside being covered to a depth of several inches. The snow soon thawed close to town, but is still lying deep on the high country, some ports of which are covered to a depth of over six inches. The cold snap has caused a setback to dairy farmers, but no lambs are about yet and slieopownors did not suffer any loss, though ewes may bo affected in some eases. The snowfall was the heaviest experienced in this district for a long time.

COLD NIGHT PREDICTED.

The Government Meteorologist tidegraphed to-day.—The indications are for southerly winds, moderate to strong. The weather will probably prove cold and showery and the night very cold. Tho barometer is rising.
