HEAVY RAINFALL.
RIVER AGAIN IN FLOOD,
Very heavy rain fell in Pahnerston North last evening and early this morning. -Mr T. R. Moore, of "Waimarama," 'i errace End, stated to a reporter that, for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day, 58 points had been registered, but at noon the barometer was rising and there were indications that the end of the week's storm was at hand. The recent rains have been responsible for some unusual fluctuations in the level of the Manawatu river as recorded by tho guage at Fit/.hcrbert street bridge. Early on Tuesday evening it read 9ft. lOins., and during the night reached 10ft, 3ins., which constitutes a flood of fair dimensions. At 8 a.m. on Wednesday the river had fallen to the Bft. mark, and the flood waters continued to recede until late yesterday afternoon when the gauge was registering only sft. 6ins. The rain overnight, however, must have been generally experienced for at noon to-day the river was at the Bft. mark and carrying a fair amount of debris, including some logs of large dimensions and much smaller driftwood. Mr A. Seifert informed a "Standard" reporter this afternoon that one effect of the sudden rise in the river will be to prevent the escape of the surface water in the low country, such as the Makarua, Koputaroa, Moutoa and even the Rangiotu districts, which were flooded earlier in the week. Alluding to the necessity for supplying information to residents in the area liable to flooding, anent sudden rises in the river, Mr Seifert said that there was a general agitation to have gauges erected at a number of points along the stream. RAIN PROBABLE. The Government meteorologist telegraphed to-day:—The indications are for southerly winds, strong to gale prevailing soon. The weather will probably become colder and also cloudy to overcast. Rain is probable. The barometer is rising.
