INTER-SCHOOL RUGBY.
BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL DEFEAT DANNEVUIKE.
The annual Rugby football match between the first fifteen of the Dannevirke High School and the second fifteen of the Palmerston North Boys High School was played on the Showgrounds this afternoon as a curtainraiser to the match between the first fifteens of the Wairarapa and Palmerston North High Schools. Playing conditions were not of the best owing to the drizzling rain that fell throughout. About 1500 spectators watched the match, the honours of which went to' the local boys after' a fair exhibi-, tion of the code. In the. forward division the local boys proved superior to the visitors, while in the. backs the teams were more evenly matched, the superior pace of the Dannevirko rearguard being more than balanced by the better handling and combination of the local boys. " . ' From the kick-off Palmerston. North set up a hot attack and for the'first ten minutes had Danne'Virke pennedup in their twenty-five. Following an opening by McDonald, Mitchinson scored for the local boys, v Ridgley's kick at goal failed. At the half-time adjournment the score had been increased by two tries scored by McDonald, both attempts at conversion failing. Palmerston North 9, Dannevirke nil.
In the second spell Burne added to the total, scoring after an opening by Tingey. Throughout the remainder of the half the local boys decidedly ' asserted their superiority and kept the visitors on the defensive throughout. Further unconverted tries were registered by Mitchinson, Tingey, and Chadwick, the game thus s ending: Palmerston North 21, Dannevirke nil. Mr. W. Boon refereed.
