SHAM MOM BRIDGE.

MENACE OF RIVER EROSION

REPORT EXPECTED SOON

The report of the engineers of the various public bodies which it was dotided to obtain at the recent Shannon conference, held to devise means of protecting the bridge from possible destruction as the result of river erosion, is expected to be presented to the public bodies concerned at an early date.

The engineers were instructed to confer with Mr E. \V. Furkett, engineer-in-chief to tho Public Works Department and on inquiry being made by a “Standard” reporter to-day as to the progress of the deliberations, ho was informed that Mr F. 0. Hay, engineer to the Manawatu-Oroua River Board, was engaged in making a survey of the river bank near the bridge, the result of which will ha placed before his colleagues for their joint consideration. Tho survey report will not be in the nature of a recommendation but merely as a guide to some definite policy. Tho reporter was further informed that, in minimising the danger to the bridge, it would probably be found necessary to provide for more room between the natural banks of the river and tho stop banks that have been erected in order to permit of greater freedom for the flow of water.
