PIG BREEDERS.
ANNUAL MEETING
Tho mutual meeting of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association, held tit Hamilton this week, was presided over by Mr A. W. Green.
Tlio annual report stated that the number of entries for and included in Volume V. were: Berkshire boars 253, sows 312, 565; Yorkshire hoars 4, sows 7, 11; Tamworth boars 20, sows 28, 48; total entries, 624, and transfers 360. The actual excess of income over expenditure for the year was only £25 os Bd, but in addition to this cash at bank and in hand totalled £238 os fid. The cost of printing Volume IV. was the heaviest expenditure during the year, an increase of nearly £9O oyer that for Volume HI. It was anticipated that the cost of printing Volume V. would he much less.
Viewing the present position of pig breeders in New Zealand, the report added: There are prospects of improvement in all directions. The demand for pedigree pigs by farmers is on the increase and breeders should advocate to the fullest the use of purebred sires among the herds kept by the dairy farmers. The remarkable advance recently made by the dairy industry in this Dominion gives us the opportunity of breeding and rearing larger numbers of pigs and this, to some extent, accounts for the marked increase in the membership of this association. There are now 2U4 members.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. , The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr N. P. Nielson; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs Bloor and S. Knight; council, .Messrs AY. H. Jacob, J. McFarlane, A. Vickers, F. W. Cornwall and R. Chilcott; auditor, Mr E, J. AVack rill.
A committee comprising the president, Messrs Bloor and Discombe was set up to report on the question of the export trade in pork.
The Perrett Shield was allocated to the Franklin A. and P. Association. It was decided to make a recommendation to all A. and P. Associations that only pigs already entered in the Association Herd Books be eligible for entry in competition for the Perrett Shield and for the Association’s Certilieate of Merit.
It was decided by those present- to form a branch of the Waikato Association.
The following resolution was adopted ; —-That on the occasion of the retirement of Mr A. AV. Green from the office of president, the members and council of tlio association express their gratitude to Mr Green for the services rendered, not only in his position as president, but also as a member of the council from the inception of the association. Owing to the valuable work done hy Mr Green, vho association is now firmly established, and for this result the members generally have him to thunk. In conclusion, we wisli our retiring president and Mrs Green many years of health and prosperity.
At a meeting of the council it was resolved to allot nine certificates of merit under the seal of the association every year, the certificates to he allotted this year to the following associations :—South Island: Christchurch, Blenheim, and Tiniaru, North Island: Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Hawera, Palmerston North and Dannevirko, and to be for the most points in Berkshire classes.
Eighteen new members were elected
