RAILWAY FINANCES.
BETTER POSITION THAN LAST YEAR. The returns on the New Zealand railways for the first four weeks of the financial year show that while a fairly good improvement has boon made in the North Island figures, the South Island figures arc not so good. Tho receipts in tlio North island for the period tip to April 28th were £291,025, and the expenditure £215,802, showing gross surplus of £75,323 while the receipts were £27,500 higher last year, but the gross surplus over expenditure was only £04,229, so that the April surplus is altogether £12,000 hotter.
(n the South Island tho receipts were £202,379, and the expenditure £l7O- - surplus of £31,873, against £230,420, and £194,471 respectively, a surplus of £35,949, showing a decreased surplus of over £4OOO for April this year.
The receipts for both islands amounted to £494,005, and the expenditure to £385,809, an excess of revenue of £IOB- - or a little over £BOOO better than for April last year.
