MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
PALMERSTON—MONDAY. (Before Mr W. G. K. Keurick, S.M.) BY-LAW CASES. Adam Craig pleaded guilty to cycling on a foot-path, and was lined UK with 2s costs. Constance Smith was mulcted in a fine of 20s and costs 2s for motoring at a clangorous speed. A line of IBs with costs 7s was imposed on George Napier for permitting his motor to obstruct traffic. A similar penalty was imposed on Georges Moran and E. 11. Kidd (Mr limes) for a like offence. William Blackbourn. for failing to carry his Borough Council taxi number on both sides of Ids car, was fined 10s and costs 7s, and for allowing his registered number to be obscured was further lined 20s and 7s costs. A. Rolf was lined 10s with 7s costs on two charges of obstruction and encumbering Cuba street with Ins car. and Chas. Douglas and Harry Todd were similarly penalised for obstruction. For failing to have his Council taxi number placed on each side ol his car. G. H. Peters was lined 10s with 7s costs. A conviction without costs was entered against if. Stabler, who,was charged with failing to carry headlights on bis ear. Defendant explained tin;, ear was a new one and ho was giving it a. trial. John Johnston had a- fine of 10s and 7s costs inflicted on him tor lading to chain the wheel of bis horse vehicle. USING CANCELLED STAMP. Sarah Ann Simpvson,(Mr limes) pleaded not guilty to a charge oi fraudulently using a cancelled postage stamp. Mr lanes said the? facts wore that on the date of the olfonee defendant, jmstod n number of letters, on each ol which the correct postage was placed. The letter in question had also the right postage, but in so mo way or other the used stamp had been attached in addition. The only explanation of how the cancelled stamp got among the other stamps was that her younger son was a stamp collector, and probably a used stamp from Ids collection got among the others. Tiie mere fact that, the correct amount of postage was on the letter should do away witu ai+V idea that there was any fraudulent intent whatever. Sergt. Henry said’ 1 defendant, had placed the correct postage on the envelope. The defaced stamp had been put on in addition. The defendant gave evidence on the lines of counsel's siatemeuf. ,Sergt. Henry said the charge hud been laid by the Postal Department to bring the matter before the-public. ; In entering a conviction without fine or costs. Ids Worship said there was no evidence whatever of any intention on defendant’s part of defrauding the Department.
