THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.

The question of the local observance of June 3 (King's birthday) as a holiday will be decided at a meeting of the committee of the Holiday Association at 10 o'clock on Monday morning at the Council Chambers. ■ The Mayor received a telegram from the Premier to-day as follows:—"Aβ a number of enquiries have been made regarding the Government's intention respecting the observance or non-observ-ance of the King's birthday, I desire, for your information, to say that I nave received a cable from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, through hie Excellency the Governor, intimating that it is the King's wish that there should be no observance of his Majesty s birthday this year. I have therefore instructed that hie Majesty's pleasure- as far as the Government is concerned is to be given effect to.— J. G. WARD.
