SANDON.

(From Ocb Own Correspondent.) \ May 28. _ 1 For some considerable time past resi- < dents of Sandon have been agitating for the instalment of a telephone exchange, and about eighteen or twenty months ago a petition wae sent in signed by fourteen ■ residents to the Telegraph Department making the request. This petition was shelved from time to time by the Department, which intimated that if- an exchange was installed it would mean the Department would have to mstal another trunk line between Sandon and Palmerston or Feilding. The matte J ,vas also put in the hands of Mr &. Newman, M.P., to try and bring it to a satisfactory conclusion. A recent occasion showed the great necessity tor this new line to the townspeople ot Bulls, and the added pressure of their influence, together with the interviewing of an officer of the Department wno recently passed through the district, brought an answer at last. The following has been received by Mr A. •&-• Drew, who was appointed to deal witn the correspondence: "The exchange at Sanson with a new metallic circuit trom Bulls and Feilding has been authorised, providing a minimum of twelve subscribers can be obtained." As, soon as this exchange is installed it will be a tremendous benefit to the people in this vicinity, as people will bo able to do business with both Feilding and Pal-. nierston without the delay of having first to go to the bureau office and then having to wait, soinatimns three or four hours, before being able to get their messages through. The new line will do awaj with the necessity of the messages having to go through either Rongotea or Foxton exchanges. Extensive alterations arc at present being made to the Wesleyan parsonage here? Two rooms are being added to the front, and the roof is to be removed and the buijding made one storey. The work is being carried out by Messrs Neilson Bros., of Feilding.
