Constable O'Halloran, of WoodviUe, has been appointed Probation Ofncer for the district. Mr G. H. Dolby, of the Rangitikei Advocate, has been appointed sub-editor of the Taranaki Herald. Mr J. Dove, who has been farming in Woodville for some time, has, with his family, removed to the Foxton district, where he has secured a section.

The Post's Christchurch .correspondent telegraphs that Mr George Laurenson, MP, is reported to be rather better in health, but his condition is etill very far from satisfactory. Miss Rees, daughter of Mr W. L. Reee, of Gisborne, received . advice from the University authorities yesterday that she had passed the LL.B. examination. Inie, with her M.A. degree, entitles her to be called to the Bar.

Mdle. Antonia Dolores left Vancouver for Australia by tho Canadian-Australian / liner Makura on Friday laet, and is expected to arrive on 13th June iu_Sydney, where she will give her first concert of the tour on 22nd June. Mdle. Dolores will tour Queensland first. His Excellency tho Governor, who is paying a farewell visit to Dunedin was presented with an address on behalf of the citizens yesterday afternoon. Subsequently he attended the annual meeting of the Society for the Health' of Women and Children, where he delivered a short speech. At 5.40 he held a levee at the Town Hall. He left for the North this morning.

Sergt. Needham and Volunteer Archer, of the Palmerston Rifles, were last evening presented- by Lieut.-Colonel Hughes with service medals, the former having completed twelve years' 6ervice and the latter sixteen. In" making the presentations Lieut.-Colonel Hughes stated that those who had an opportunity of winning service medals should take every advantage of it, for under the new shortservice system medals would probably be done away with.

Mr James Barton; of Spring Grove, Marlborough, died on Tuesday, aged eighty-nine- years. He was a native of Coventry, and went to Nelson in the care of the late Mr Robert I. Boddington, senr., in 1842. After some years he removed to Auckland, and later on went to Honolulu, where he spent several years: Returning to Nelson he became dispenser at the Nelson Hoepital under Dr. Boor, and subsequently was elected a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria. ./

After the parade last evening the Palmereton Rifles assembled in the orderly room to say farewell to Lieutenant Perston, who is leaving Palmerston to take up a position in the Bank of New Zealand in Wanganui. The departing officer was presented with a handeomelyframed photo of the corps,- and in making the presentation Captain Mounsey referred in glowing terms to the services rendered by Lieut. Perston to the corps and volunteering generally. He had proved himself to be- a capable officer. Lieut. Perston suitably replied.

. At the annual meeting of the Feildin'g A. and P. Association the following oflicers were elected : —President, Mr A. Campbell ; vice-presidents, Messrs A. H. Atkinson, Hugh Burrell, E. Short, and D. H. Guthrie, M.P.; hon. treasurer, Mr E. ■ Goodbehere; committee, Messrs F. J. Boddy, H. J. Booth, J. W. Bramwell, N. Gorton, F. S. Haggitt, J. Knight, F. Y. Lethbridge, D. McElroy, J. H. Perrefet, W. Reid, S. Strauchan, G. C. Weller, and J. Woolcoombe; and the following were elected by ballot: —Messrs H. Burrell, A. R. Mayo, J. R. Maclennan, W. J. Phillips, A. F. Fitzherbert, G. G. Cobbe. J. Corpe.

The death is announced of Mr Frederick B. Mcßeth, of Kiwitea, who after a very painful illness passed away at the residence of hie brother-in-law, Mr T. H. Battle, at Wanganui, yesterday. The deceased, who was a son of the late Mr John Mcßeth, of Dunsinane, Marton, was one of the first settlers to go into the Kiwitea Block, he and his brothers being among the pioneer eettlers of that district. He was one of the eight sons of the original owner of Dunsinane, who was one of the earliest settlers in the Rangitikei. The deceased's eldest brother is Mr J. F. Mcßeth, for many years Chief Postmaster at Wanganui, Deceased leaves a. widow, a eon, and a daughter.
