Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs Perry returned home the other evening after spending a most enjoyable holiday in Rotorua. A meeting of voung men was held on Saturday evening to consider the advisability of starting the Debating Society a~ain. It was eventually decided to give it another trial, and Messrs 11. Smith, L Wilton, and F. Mcßae (sec.) were elected a committee to try and rouse tho public interest it deserves. Ine opening debate will .take place on June 18 and will be open to the general public. , . F The bachelors aro busy preparing tor their annual ball which is to take place on Friday. The floor is being got into excellent order, and Pickering's band has been engaged for the occasion. A large number of invitations have been sent out, so that this should eclipse all previous balls held here. The. local schoolboys played the Shannon schoolboys here on Saturday, and had a walk-over, winning by no less than 30 points to nil. Mr Ern. Thompson gave every satisfaction as referee. The carpenters are making good progress with Mr H. Liggins' house, which, when finished, will be a splendid additon to tho street. Mr T. Dcveral is also having a house erected. While passing through the town today I noticed' several men busily cn-o-aged around the .school shaking the metal delivered there some six months ago for asphalting purposes. It is evident that the new committee does not intend to let this metal become overgrown with grass. The winter holidays should be a good time for the contractors to do the job. as .the children will then bo at a safe distance from the tar-pot. . ■
