RONGOTEA.

May 24.

On Saturday last the Rongotca-Sandon combination met Awahou in the first round for the Cup. After a good game Rongotea proved tho victors by six points to three. Frank Burgess and W. Foster did the scoring for the homo team, and both played a good game. Percy Burgess and W. Humphries also call for special mention. If our team .could get more practice, and thus secure better combination in play, they would, I am sure, be able to hold their own against most teams in this district, but at present there is a little too much individual play. Mr Stitchbury, as referee,. satisfied both sides by his iair decisions. - . I : notice that Glen Oroua (with the assistance of one or two Rongotea men) managed to draw with I 1 eilding on Saturday last. Better luck next tune, ye sports. If any further assistance is required we have still one or two Soccer" players left in the bag that n ia y be useful in strengthening tho Glen Oroua eleven. ■ On Saturday last the death occurred of Mrs W. Hunt (wife of Mr W. Hunl and mother of Messrs H. H. Hunt anc W. J. Hunt), at the age of 77. ■ Mucl sympathy was shown to Mr Hunt in his sad loss. The funeral took place or Monday last. J 1 ! 10 Rev. G. Frost, .0: Sandon, conducted the service. A grea many friends of the deceased lady at tended the funeral, 37 conveyances fol lowing v the hearse. Tho old lady wa very highly respected, and was knowi far and wide. They were one of tho first families to settle in this district. The sportsmen of this locality will bo sorry to hoar that Mr Frank Wright met with an accident on Saturday last. He was working the "planer," and through some unexplained reason got his finger in the machinery, with the result that it was taken off at the Top joint. It will be remembered that Mr J. L. Glover lost one of his lingers about a fortnight ago. Both these men were emploved in the same department at Messrs Glover and Son's coach factory. Fingers are evidently going cheap in Rongotea just now. . 'The Primitive Methodists held their anniversary services on Sunday last. They were conducted by the Rev. Sharp, of Feilding (superintendent of the circuit.). The public meeting held on | Monday evening was well attended. Addresses were given by Revs. Sharp and Frost, also by the Salvation Army Captain from Feilding, and other local gentlemen. . The U.A.O.D. held their usual meetin"- on Monday evening. Bro. McMinn presiding. One new member was initiated The following were the nominations for officers for the coming year: A.D. Bros. C. Good and P. Feeney; FA Bros. W. Foster and Feeney; Sec."' Bro. Seddon; Treasurer. Bro. Pearcc; R.A.8.. Bros. Martin and Halford: L.A.8.. Bros. L. I'oster and J. Pereson; R.V.8.. Bros. A Smith. G. Good, and J. Jifldns; L.V.8.. Bros. Crawford and Ellery; C.G., Bros Hurley and J. Lane; 0.G., Bros A. Smith, L. Foster, and Jifkins; auditors Bros. C. G. Rush and C. Page, Oroua Lodge. Tho installation takes place at the next meeting, when Bro. Jackson, district president, will preside, assisted by Bro. Grant, secretary oE the Grand Lodge. This lodge seems to be making steady headway, and it only wants a little more interest to be shown by some o the members, who are_somewhat backward at coming forward to make it a pronounced success. The postponed dance is to be held on Friday, June 10, when every effort is to be made to' provide an 'enjoyable evening.
