THE EXPERIENCES OF SOME NOTABLE FIRMS. Leading British business people told how they owed their success to advertising at a reccnt dinner of the London Thirty Club. Mr R. Woodman Burbridge, of Ilarroad's, said his firm's success was duo to advertising, of which ho did not think enough was done by tho largo stores. Last year I-larrod's spent £68.000 on advertising, tfnd this year tho figure would be higher. Mr D. Stewart Dawson said ho too owed his success to advertising. Ho related how ho began business with £50, and had built up a very big firm by steady advertising. Ho could tell stories about advertising that would electrify them and inducc each one of them to go homo and advertise. • Mr Selfridgo remarked that more money was spent on advertising than on , any other single commodity—not excepting food and clothing—in tho use of mankind, and yet no advertising was per- 1 feet. They had never seen advertising that seemed entirely satisfactory. His second largest Item of expenditure was "\ on advertising.
