AMERICAN PROSPERITY.
THE HIGH COST OF FOOD
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.. (Per Press Association.) LONDON, Feb. 7. The Daily Chronicle's 'New York correspondent reports that official returns show that there is six hundred million sterling worth of food in various trusts and cold stores, including fourteen million carcases of cattle, twanty-five million sheep, fifty million pigs, and five million pounds' Avorth of fish for the Lenten season. The cost of food is therefore not due .to scarcity. The Chronicle adds" that despite the increase in railway receipts and other signs of prosperity, American financial circles are thoroughly unsettled by the attitude towards trusts. The value of the stock of thirty-two railways, and twenty-nine industrial combinations, has depreciated two hundred and seven millions sterling in six months owing to the fear of the trusts being prosecuted.
