AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. At a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Athletic Association held in Wellington last night the Wellington Centre applied for affiliation of the llawora Club. There was some discussion as to the extensiveness of the Wellington district, which' includes Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and Nelson, as compared with the other districts. The opinion was freely expressed that something ought to be done to lessen the district either by forming a new centre at Wanganui, or by attaching Nelson to Canterbury. Another proposal was to attach Taranaki to Auckland. • The affiliation was agreed to, and a committee was set up to report on the better distribution of centres.

The Ota go centre notified that it was not in, favour of the proposal to make

a- levy on club members towards the financing of New Zealand representatives at the Olympic games, but it would do all in its power to raise any amount which it might be called upon to provide for this purpose. The Otago centre favours holding the annual cross-country championship under the auspices of the Southland centre. Canterbury thinks that a more centre place for the race than Riverton would suit better. The matter will be dealt with when the other centres reply to the Council's circular. ' ■ • } .Reinstatement as amateurs was agreed to in the cases of J. W. MeKenzio (Invarcargill) and J. Garrett (Auckland). The State Premiership Shield, won by the New: Zealand team at Brisbane in October last, is to be held by the President, and will be insured. Mr C. E. Bridge brought forward a proposal for the disposal of the gold modal presented to the Association by the Queensland Jubilee Exhibition Committee in commemoration of the performance of the New Zealand athletes at the last Australian championships at Brisbane. Ho proposed that the medal be mounted on wood and made a challenge trophy to bo presented every year at the New Zealand championship meeting. The award will be made on the records and standards gained by provincial representatives, -the province with the most points to take the medal for, the year. The proposal was adopted, and will be put into practice at Auckland.
